10 Experiences to try in Napa Valley

10 Experiences to try in Napa Valley

Napa Valley, renowned for its world-class wines, is an ideal destination for couples or a group of friends. Although the wine is the biggest draw, the region’s natural beauty is another reason to put this destination on your bucket list.

I’ll start with some basic facts: Napa Valley is only 30 miles long and 5 miles wide and has a Mediterranean climate similar to parts of France. The first commercial winery was established in 1861 and now over 450 wineries call this valley home.

I lived in California for a few years and could visit Napa Valley as a day trip. I’ve also planned trips for clients more recently. I worked with two different couples who chose Napa Valley as a destination for an anniversary trip. Let’s take a look at what you can experience in Napa Valley, both wine-related and not.

1. Wine Tasting: A Signature Experience

Wine tasting is at the heart of Napa Valley’s allure. With over 450 wineries, the region offers a diverse array of tasting experiences.

Napa Valley has an ideal environment for cultivating wine grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the most widely planted, but more than three dozen grape varieties are grown. Many wineries are family-owned and operated.

Here are a few notable wineries to consider:

Robert Mondavi Winery: A pioneer in the Napa wine industry, offering comprehensive tours and tastings.

Beringer Vineyards: The oldest continuously operating winery in Napa, known for its historic architecture and extensive wine selection.

Castello di Amorosa: A 13th-century-inspired Tuscan castle winery offering unique tours and tastings.

Sterling Vineyards: Famous for its aerial tram that transports visitors up to the hilltop winery with dazzling views, Sterling offers a memorable tasting experience paired with panoramic vistas of Napa Valley. This is my personal favorite.

2. Wine Culture beyond Tastings

Napa isn’t just about sipping; it’s about understanding the art of winemaking. Many wineries offer immersive experiences like vineyard tours explaining grape cultivation, blending workshops where you create your own wine, and grape stomping experiences during harvest season.

3. Riding the Napa Valley Wine Train

Experience a journey back in time aboard the Napa Valley Wine Train. This restored 1915 Pullman train offers gourmet dining as it travels through the valley’s picturesque landscapes. It’s a unique way to enjoy the region’s beauty and culinary delights.

4. Hot Air Balloon Rides: A Bird’s-Eye View of Napa Valley

Experience the breathtaking landscapes of Napa Valley from above with a hot air balloon ride. Early morning flights provide panoramic views of vineyards, rolling hills, and distant mountains. It’s a serene way to start your day that will make an unforgettable memory.

5. Biking the Napa Valley Vine Trail

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Napa Valley Vine Trail offers a scenic route through the heart of wine country. This 12.5-mile paved path stretches from Napa to Yountville, passing through picturesque vineyards and charming towns. Bike rentals are available in Napa, making it easy to embark on this leisurely ride.

6. Hiking and Nature Walks

For those who enjoy the great outdoors, Napa Valley offers several hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty. One of my client couples went hiking in Bothe-Napa Valley State Park, which has more than 10 miles of trails. Wetlands Edge Park offers multi-use trails along the Napa-Sonoma marsh shoreline, ideal for birdwatching and enjoying sunrise or sunset. And there are lots more. Visit Napa Valley has a great list of trail recommendations.

7. Boating on the Napa River

Explore Napa Valley from a different perspective: the Napa River. Local outfitters offer kayak and paddleboard rentals, or you could join a guided tour suitable for all skill levels. Glide through calm waters, observe local wildlife, and enjoy the tranquility away from the bustling wineries. If paddling sounds like too much work on your vacation, you’ll be happy to hear you can sit back, relax, and let someone else do it. I booked one of my clients on a Venetian-style gondola ride on the Napa River.

8. Relaxing in Calistoga’s Hot Springs and Mud Baths

Calistoga, located at the northern end of Napa Valley, is famous for its geothermal hot springs and volcanic mud baths. Spas offer rejuvenating treatments that harness the natural mineral waters and mud, providing a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration.

9. Exploring the Arts and Culture Scene

Napa Valley boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene. di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art showcases contemporary art from Northern California artists. Napa Valley Museum offers exhibits on the history, culture, and environment of Napa Valley, as well as works by regional artists. Rail Arts District (RAD) Napa is a two-mile stretch in downtown Napa that features outdoor contemporary art murals along the Napa Valley Vine Trail.

10. Culinary Experiences Beyond Wine

Napa Valley’s culinary scene is as impressive as its wines. The Oxbow Public Market in downtown Napa is a food lover’s paradise, offering a variety of artisanal vendors, from fresh oysters to gourmet chocolates. Additionally, the Culinary Institute of America at Copia offers cooking classes and demonstrations for those looking to enhance their culinary skills. The next time I’m in Napa, I’m definitely going to visit the headquarters and showroom of Rancho Gordo Heirloom Beans. I’ve been a member of their Bean Club since 2016.
