Panama City, Panama, is a vibrant capital brimming with cultural riches, with easy access to natural wonders and amazing adventures. Panama offers endless opportunities for curious travelers to immerse themselves in the country’s rich heritage and natural beauty.
I traveled to Panama City for the Adventure Travel World Summit 2024. Between the conference and my adventures before and after, I spent two weeks in Panama. Here are my recommendations for six must-do adventures and day trips from Panama City.

1. Explore the Historic Charm of Casco Viejo
Panama City’s captivating Casco Viejo (Spanish for Old Town), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-see. Stroll through the red-brick streets on your own, or take a guided tour. (I did both.)

Casco Viejo is home to several beautifully preserved historic churches. The grand Metropolitan Cathedral is pictured above. It is graced with twin bell towers, and serves as the heart of this charming historic district. The San José Church is famed for its golden altar.

The French influence on the architecture of Casco Viejo, Panama’s historic old town, can be traced to the late 19th century. Many wealthy Panamanians at the time were educated in France and admired the Parisian aesthetic. They gave the district a distinct European flair with ornate stone facades, wrought-iron balconies, and tile roofs.

It is in the process of being restored to its original beauty. I saw several buildings under construction.

You might also want to tour a museum and browse the local shops for unique souvenirs.

For dinner, try some authentic Panamanian cuisine or one of many international restaurants. Later, stop for a craft cocktail at one of the trendy rooftop bars. Casco Viejo’s rich history and modern-day energy make it a must-visit neighborhood during your time in Panama City.
2. Marvel at the Engineering Feat of the Panama Canal
No trip to Panama is complete without experiencing the awe-inspiring Panama Canal. The Miraflores Locks Visitor Center is an easy taxi ride from Panama City. Visit the observation deck where you can watch ships passing through the canal’s original concrete chambers.

You won’t want to miss the film in the IMAX theater which is narrated by Morgan Freeman and provides an excellent overview of the canal.
In 2016, a major expansion project was completed. Additional locks were built to handle larger ships, including container ships, tankers, and the largest cruise ships. To learn more about this, you should visit the Agua Clara Locks Visitor Center on the Caribbean side.
3. Discover the Traditions of the Embera Village
Venture into the lush Chagres National Park to visit the indigenous Embera community. Accessible only by dugout canoe (with a motor), this remote village offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life of the Embera people.

You can watch cultural demonstrations, such as the creation of intricate handicrafts, the application of natural body paint, plus music and dancing.

Then savor a delicious lunch of freshly caught fish and tropical fruits and vegetables.

This authentic encounter with Panama’s indigenous heritage is an unforgettable experience.
4. Explore the Rainforest in Search of Wildlife
Panama’s verdant rainforests are teeming with an extraordinary array of flora and fauna. Embark on a guided hike through the lush Soberanía National Park, where you’ll have the chance to spot iconic species like sloths, howler monkeys, toucans, and the elusive jaguar.

With the guidance of local experts, you’ll navigate trails and immerse yourself in the wonders of Panama’s incredible natural landscapes.

5. Scuba Dive in Two Oceans on the Same Day
Situated at the crossroads of two mighty oceans, Panama offers a unique diving opportunity to dive two oceans in one day. Take advantage of the country’s unique geographic position and plan a day trip to explore the vibrant marine ecosystems of both the Atlantic Ocean / Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Start your adventure on the Pacific coast where you might spot sting rays and moray eels.

Then move to the Caribbean side, where you can marvel at the vibrant coral reefs and encounter a diverse array of tropical fish.

This exceptional dive experience is a true bucket-list item for any ocean enthusiast.
6. Escape to the Stunning San Blas Islands
Venture off the beaten path and discover the breathtaking San Blas Islands, a stunning archipelago located on Panama’s Caribbean coast.

Accessible only by boat, these remote islands are home to the indigenous Guna people, who maintain a traditional way of life. Snorkel in the crystal-clear waters, lounging on the pristine white-sand beaches, and meet the Guna communities with their colorful traditional clothing.

You might even get treated to a performance with music and dancing.

This peaceful oasis offers a respite from the hustle and bustle of Panama City, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the tranquility of the Caribbean island lifestyle.
