Belize – an adventurous destination

Belize – an adventurous destination

I have been working on finalizing my travel plans for 2022. One of the destinations that I plan to visit is Belize. Belize has been on my radar screen, but after I attended an online conference about adventure travel in Belize, it got bumped up on my list.

While I’m certain that I’ll have lots more to write after I actually visit Belize, I wanted to write a brief article about the reasons it made my list for 2022.

Belize had been on my bucket list for a while because of the Great Blue Hole, a giant marine sinkhole that was made famous by Jacques Cousteau.

Becoming certified as an Active and Adventure Specialist was one of the goals I achieved in 2021. I love adventures and learning about adventurous destinations, so I jumped at the opportunity to learn more about Belize. And I fell in love!

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

The Great Blue Hole mentioned above is part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This reef system makes Belize an excellent destination for snorkeling and scuba diving.

Belize has lots of beautiful beaches and hundreds of cayes, but not a lot of hustle and bustle. You won’t find high-rise megaresorts. It’s a quieter experience where you can get away from it all.

Inland Adventures

While most visitors to Belize are drawn by the beaches, there is plenty to do inland also, especially for adventure-seekers. You’ll find national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. You can go birding and caving. It’s a fantastic destination for nature and wildlife lovers.

Ancient Mayan Ruins

The Mayan population is thought to have exceeded a million people in Belize during the Classic period between 250 and 900 AD. They left behind about a dozen major sites that we can now explore. And, you can even meet contemporary Mayan people.

Belize is about the size of Massachusetts and the official language is English. That makes it easier to get around. They’ve also got a Tourism Gold Standard program in place that is designed to keep travelers and their own citizens safe. It’s just the kind of destination that many people are looking for during the pandemic.
