Ohio – Jeni’s Ice Creams

Ohio – Jeni’s Ice Creams

Believe it or not, I first heard about Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at a book festival.  Jeni Britton Bauer, the creator of these delectable treats, is also the author of a cookbook titled Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home. Her book and my book, Adventures Around Cincinnati – A Parent’s Guide to Unique and Memorable Places to Explore with your Kids, were both selected to be part of the Books by the Banks Cincinnati USA Book Festival last fall. I would have loved to talk to Jeni about her yummy frozen concoctions, but I was at my own table most of the time.

One thing my entire family can agree on is that we all love ice cream. When we visited my sister in Sweden several years ago, we were fascinated by all the unique flavors we found there:  chocolate chili pepper, chocolate basil, and popcorn (yes, popcorn!) flavored ice cream to name a few.  We hadn’t come across anything quite that unique in the U.S. until we discovered Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.  Jeni’s has several ice cream shops in Ohio, most of them in and around Columbus.  We recently visited the shop in Grandview Heights.

Check out their selection of signature flavors:

In addition to the signature flavors, there were several limited edition flavors as well.  The ice cream scoopers were happy to let us sample the flavors first.  I found that the Queen City Cayenne was very much like the chocolate chili pepper ice cream I’d had in Sweden.  All of us tasted several flavors before deciding on our final selections.

Jeni must have known that everyone would have a hard time picking just one flavor, so she made it easy to try several by offering  half-scoops.  You can try two half-scoops for $4, three half-scoops for $5, or four half-scoops for $6.  A waffle cone adds $1 to the price.

This ice cream is so delicious by itself that there’s no need to add toppings.  But if you’re in the mood for a sundae, Jeni’s has a menu for those too:

I know, I know, now I’ve made you crave ice cream, but I’m also going to tell you how to get your fix. In addition to Jeni’s shops near Columbus, OH, there’s also one near Cleveland and two in Nashville, TN.  Not close enough? Jeni’s also works with many retail partners who sell their ice cream or you could order from their website and have it shipped to you. Or, if you are an adventurous cook, you could buy her cookbook and make some yourself.

Have you tried Jeni’s Ice Cream?  What’s your favorite flavor?
