Mexico is near and dear to my heart, especially Mexico City. Why? My paternal grandfather was Mexican and took me to Mexico City to visit relatives when I was 12.
One of the reasons I love to travel is to learn about a country’s culture. Attending a festival while traveling is a terrific way to experience a country’s culture firsthand.
Festivals are a fun way to get outdoors. Most will have something to offer everyone in the family. They are full of fun, great food, and music. Here are five festivals that you might consider scheduling your vacation around.
Corredor Cultural Roma-Condesa
This festival is held twice a year, in the spring and fall. The underlying concept of this festival is eco-friendly consumption, and it is held in one of the hippest neighborhoods in Mexico City. Explore shops, businesses, and restaurants in the area while enjoying amazing exhibits of art, design, and fashion along with food and drinks.
Vive Latino
This three-day music festival, usually held in March, began in 1998 and has grown since then. It started as purely Latin music and now includes non-Latin performers and other genres like jazz and progressive rock. The lineups include up-and-coming artists as well as major headliners.
Festival del Centro Historico
This festival is held in the historic downtown district of Mexico City in March or April. It is a classic festival highlighting the history of Mexican culture and its evolution throughout time. The culture is examined in art, music, dance, food, and drink. The events of this festival are spread throughout the historic district, which serves as a beautiful backdrop.
Ambulante
This is a film festival that travels throughout Mexico for three months. It lands in Mexico City around January or February. This film festival is an examination of the world, world issues, and cultures. There are numerous events (many of them free) that offer different viewings for various categories of films and documentaries.
Corona Capital
This is another music festival that caters to the fans of indie and rock music. It was first held in 2010 and is now a major music festival in the world. International stars like The Strokes and Beck have performed at this festival. The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez is the hosting site every year.
When vacationing internationally, many travelers are looking for an immersion into the local culture and an experience unlike one they would get at home. Festivals like these will allow for such immersion in a setting that is familiar. Adding a festival to your itinerary can be an interesting way to experience all that Mexico City has to offer.
